Artist Biography 

​

Joyce Joshua is a contemporary painter from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, whose work explores the deep connection between humans and nature existing within landscapes. Her work is steeped in Contemporary Africanism drawing on everyday life, customs and rituals from her surroundings and heritage. Born in Calabar, Cross Rivers State,  she discovered her passion for art as a child, beginning with drawing before refining her skills through formal education. She later studied Fine and Industrial Arts at the University of Uyo, where she deepened her understanding of visual arts and artistic expression.

Joyce has exhibited her work in galleries and art spaces. Her first solo exhibition, titled The Unbounded Freedom of Childhood, celebrated innocence, play, and the pure bond between children and nature. Her paintings was showcased at +234 Art Fair in Lagos 2026. After winning a Women in Arts Award organised in partnership with Her Voice Foundation in 2025 her work was displayed at The Golla Art Gallery in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 2026. In 2025 she exhibited at Lagos Fringe Festival.

Working in a realistic style, Joyce uses expressive brushwork and a rich interplay of both warm and cool tones to capture moments of harmony, reflection, and movement within natural landscapes. Her compositions often center on figures interacting with water, trees, and open skies, inviting viewers to explore their own relationship with the natural world while embracing the beauty and serenity of nature. Through her work, she highlights the importance of nature in providing balance and well-being, reminding us of its role in sustaining life, offering tranquillity, and inspiring creativity.

Artist Statement 

​

Growing up surrounded by the gently streams and the unbounded freedom of childhood, I found my earliest inspirations in the simple joy and profound experiences of my childhood. These memories are the heartbeat of my artistic journey, serving as a lens through which I view the world and my place within it.

Art, to me, is a dialogue between memory, imagination, and our connection to nature. My paintings capture fleeting moments, often centering on a dominant figure within a vivid, immersive environment. Through colour, texture, and composition, I seek to evoke nostalgia, curiosity, and quiet introspection.

My works explores the relationship between how humans and nature exist within landscapes, how we are shaped by them, and how they, in turn, reflect our emotions. Water, trees, and open spaces are not just backdrops but active participants in the story. Patterns, gestures, and posture play a crucial role in shaping the narrative, allowing the viewer to step into the world I create and form their own interpretations.

Every brushstroke is an attempt to preserve a moment, a mood, or an untold story. My goal is not just to represent but to resonate, to spark recognition in the unfamiliar and to give voice to the deep, often unspoken bond between people and the natural world.
